Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) is a water-soluble cellulose ether derived from the chemical modification of natural cellulose. It appears as a white or slightly yellow powder, odorless and tasteless, easily dissolving in water to form a transparent viscous colloid. Its core properties include excellent thickening capacity (significantly increasing solution viscosity), suspension stability (effectively preventing particle sedimentation and emulsion separation), film-forming ability, and strong water retention.  Due to its non-toxic and safe nature multifunctionality, CMC is widely used in the food industry (e.g., as a stabilizer and thickener in ice cream and yogurt), daily chemical products (as a binder and anti-redeposition agent in toothpaste and detergents), pharmaceuticals (as a tablet binder and film substrate), oil drilling (as a drilling fluid thickener), paper and textile industries (as a strengthening and sizing agent), and construction materials (as a water-retaining agent for cement). It is renowned as the "MSG of industry" for its versatile applications.
